A brief history of Freshford Surgery
Several generations of doctors have worked from Freshford village and have seen great changes in both the practice of medicine and in the way that health services are delivered.
From the end of the nineteenth century a Dr Flemming, (commemorated by a stained glass window by the organ in St Peter’s church), worked in the village and later Dr Vaisey worked from a surgery in a house on what was called Doctors Hill.
In 1962, Dr Cocoran took over the practice and set up surgery in the present premises - Younghusband House - that in its time had been a coffee room, games room and reading room. Dr Corcoran joined with Dr Robert Fleming to form a partnership serving Beckington and the villages along the A36 to Freshford. A further surgery opened in 1982 and the practice spread into Frome.
The present Beckington Family Practice partnership of Drs Brooks, Archer, Mansfield, Beaven and Gibbs work also with Dr Stephenson from the main purpose-built surgery in Beckington. Branch surgeries open daily in Freshford and Fromefield. At Beckington and Freshford prescribed medication can be dispensed to those living in rural areas.
Though modern medicine and the health service are continually advancing and adapting, the waiting room at Freshford surgery still has the friendly atmosphere of a village meeting place.
